Unbroken Cultural Traditions

It is very hard to break a habit, especially if its a cultural tradition.

My Indian ancestors had some very strong cultural traditions that are still standing strong in every Hispanic kitchen in the world. No matter where we live, making "Sofrito" in a Maseta & Pilon" is a must when it comes to Spanish cooking.

The photo above is a picture of a Maseta & a Pilon. This wooden gadget is found in every Latin kitchens. It is used to mash garlic, onions, peppers & cilantro for most of our typical dishes. Without it we are lost in the our sacred cooking room. It comes in every size imaginable and I have 3 of them.

I could use the blender or a food processor to do what this little gadget does, but it is not the same...plus its exactly how Grandma taught me to cook with and I cannot break a good thing.
